Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project (Netflix) – Legendary director John Landis delves into the life and career of an equally legendary stand-up comedian in this entertaining and hilarious documentary. I’ve always enjoyed Don Rickles’ humor because he makes fun of everyone equally. There is something surprisingly humbling about that since we are all human and are capable of doing ridiculous and stupid things. The documentary also presents Rickles as a loving husband and loyal friend, revealing his trademark razzing as a sign of sincere affection.

Troll Hunter (Netflix) – The Norwegian government is tough on wildlife hunting restrictions. They tightly control the population of many wild animals, including bears. When a series of bears are found shot, students from Volda University set out to do some investigative journalism and find the man they suspect is poaching the bears. There’s just one problem; he’s hunting something much larger than bears.
Troll Hunter is a 2010 found-footage monster thriller that has fairly decent production quality. I remember this first coming onto Netflix a few years ago when the title and poster image caught my eye. Undaunted by the subtitles, I continued watching and was pleasantly surprised. I think it deserves a bit higher treatment than a “B-level” mindset that the movie poster indicates, but it definitely keeps an undertone of campiness throughout. The Volda University students follow Hans, the man they suspected to be the bear poacher, as he takes them on hunting trips to investigate what is making the troll population so sick. There are some subtle, and some very on-the-nose callbacks to troll mythology, including their hatred of Christians and propensity to turn to stone when exposed to sunlight. I doubt this would jump to the top of anyone’s favorites list in the “found footage” category, but it’s a decent flick to burn through on a rainy spring day.
