RWT’s Official Disney – Pixar Bracket Challenge
If you’re a part of any social media group to discuss film and television you have likely seen the “Disney – Pixar Bracket” making the rounds this week. That’s a really fun experiment, especially for this time of year, when we’re already thinking about who or what is the best of the best!
However, here at Reel World Theology, we grew increasingly frustrated at the layout of the Disney – Pixar bracket going around. The matchups didn’t seem to make sense with how the seeds would fall, it was missing some classic Disney films, it grouped all the Toy Story movies in the same region… the problems were abounding. So, we took matters into our own hands and created our own! Introducing Reel World Theology’s Disney – Pixar Bracket Challenge!
What’s so great about ours, you ask? Well, allow us to explain…
- First, the seeding actually makes sense. Seeds were determined by ranking ALL Pixar and Disney Animated movies (77 total) by IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes rating, Audience score (via RT), and total adjusted U.S. box-office. So we have a healthy balance of critic and audience opinion. We then got their average rank from those sources, listed them in order and seeded them accordingly out to 32 teams. For a look at the full breakdown, visit the Google spreadsheet here.
- This means only the best movies between the two studios are included. You’ll find some Pixar films simply didn’t make the cut. For example, not a single Cars film is included. You’ll also notice some beloved Disney classics weren’t up to snuff, like Cinderella and Bambi. This may hurt some feelings, but the seeding process ensures that what is included isn’t completely arbitrary.
- The “regions” are named after the primary or common location of the 1 seed film. We thought this was a fun addition. Who isn’t smiling at the thought of Winnie the Pooh and Pinocchio duking it out in Andy’s Room? Or the classical matchup of Snow White against Fantasia under the scorching sun of the Pridelands? Toy Story is the overall number one followed by Lion King, Toy Story 3, and Finding Nemo.
- You’ll notice that no sequels fell in each other’s regions. This was not by design, but occurred naturally through the seeding process because it’s awesome.
- You also have some intriguing potential upsets. Finding Nemo may be in hot water against The Little Mermaid. And Inside Out may be in for a messy fight against Tangled.
Finally, as a special feature to our readers, and to the world, we made this bracket challenge interactive through Brackify so that you can pick your winners and see who wins in the overall vote!
